You are not alone against autism!
With the aim to build a school for autistic children; to provide counseling, comfort, support, and resources for closed ones; to raise awareness and understanding of autism in Mauritius; to advocate autistic needs at the parliamentary level; and to create a community where autistic children can feel accepted, supported, and understood, Autism Association (Mauritius) is here to help you.
- Do you fear not finding the right institution for the schooling of your autistic child?
- Do you dread your child’s fate after you departure?
- Do you wish you had more knowledge on how to deal with your autistic child?
- Do you hope the government would be more proactive in dealing with autism in Mauritius?
- Do you feel helpless when your autistic child creates a tantrum?
- Do you fear your autistic child running away under subpar supervision?
- Do you feel sad when your child is resigned?
If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then I have some important news for you… There are several hundreds of us going through the same thing every single day!
Although APEIM offered help to all disadvantaged children, we have been told by institutions that they will accept any child except an autistic one. After running around for hours to find a solution for our beloved child, we decided to form Autism Association (Mauritius) in September 2009 when two of us were determined to be personally involved in the education of our children. Since then, we have come a long way. Autism Intervention Association was officially registered on 26 February 2010 with the intent of being more active in setting up a good structure for autistic children with the help of professionals in the health and education sectors.
There is hope for your autistic child! We are here for you and we can help each other build a better future for autistic children in Mauritius. Let’s together become pioneers and change autism in Mauritius forever through Autism Association (Mauritius).
Two of our executive members attended an Autism convention in Reunion and learned about how to make a real difference in the lives of autistic children in Mauritius. Through the help of a few committees and organizations from Reunion, we plan to establish a school specifically for autistic children in Mauritius. We are currently growing Autism Association (Mauritius) to a level where we are eligible for funding from the government of Mauritius. Since we are the only organization in Mauritius catering only for autistic children, you should consider attending one of our meetings and see for yourself whether the organization is a fit for you.
Our members are constantly sharing information on how to better deal with their autistic children. One idea that you can implement immediately is to accept the state of your child. Until you accept that your child is autistic, you cannot move ahead. Accepting it gives you the power to change it. You should also consistently read materials on working with autistic children such as TEACCH and ABA.
Another great idea you can implement right now is to be consistent with your autistic child. Autistic children love routines and that’s the type of environment you should provide them. Also, communicate clearly using simple words so they are not bewildered.
We are indeed the only hope for our children and the organization’s future. Our fight is in fact to integrate our children into the society so they can enjoy a normal life.
This organization is mainly for parents of autistic children to work in close collaboration with professionals in the medical and educational field. Autism Association (Mauritius) also welcomes volunteers who want to work with and help autistic children and their closed ones.
On the other hand, this organization is not for people interested only in making a profit without having empathy for autistic children and their parents.
Autism Association (Mauritius) is different from any other similar organization out there since it is dedicated to autistic children with a clear focus on their needs. We are not spread too thin among many concerns and wish to provide support and resources for parents of autistic children.
Remember that you can attend one meeting and see for yourself before deciding to join the organization. I understand that you must be busy with your work and taking take of your autistic child, but we are the only hope this community has. Are you confused about where to leave your children to go on vacation? Members of Autism Association (Mauritius) help each other out during tough times and are perfectly capable of taking care of autistic children. You might actually be able to work better and take better care of your autistic child by joining Autism Association (Mauritius). We can together build a support network and provide you with the guidance and information you need to work better with your Autistic child.
We all dream of a day when our autistic children will have a personalized institution for their needs and will feel accepted and integrated into the Mauritian community. Together, we can make Autism Association (Mauritius) achieve its aims and objectives successfully and make the dream a reality. Without Autism Association (Mauritius), our autistic children might have no support after our death, might not integrate into the community, might not be understood by society, might not have a proper education, and might not become the best he/she can be. Grab this opportunity and make the most of it!
